I remember the first time I noticed a garden statue of Saint Francis — the kind with a small bird perched on his outstretched hand. I was visiting my grandmother's backyard, maybe eight years old, and I asked her who that man was. She smiled and said, "That's the saint who loved animals more than anyone." That answer stayed with me for years. I'd like to prayer to him, for my dog, and for all creatures created by god:
1. A General Blessing for My Dog
Lord God,
through the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi,
I ask for your blessing upon my beloved dog.
You created this creature with a loyal heart, a joyful spirit, and a love that mirrors your own unconditional grace.
Watch over him, keep him safe from harm, and fill his days with warmth and peace.
May I be worthy of the devotion he so freely gives.
Amen.

2. Prayer for a Sick Dog
Heavenly Father,
my heart is heavy as I watch my dog suffer.
As St. Francis cared for the sick and the suffering without hesitation,
I turn to you now and ask for your healing hand to rest upon my faithful companion.
Ease his pain, restore his strength, and give him comfort in his weakness.
And if it be your will that he recover,
let his tail wag again with the joy only you can give.
Amen.
3. Prayer for a New Dog
Dear Lord,
today a new soul has entered my home and my heart.
Like St. Francis who welcomed every creature as a brother or sister,
I welcome this dog into my life with gratitude and love.
Grant me the patience to train him well,
the gentleness to earn his trust,
and the wisdom to understand his needs.
May our bond reflect the care you ask all of us to show your creation.
Amen.
4. Prayer for a Lost Dog
O God, my dog is lost and I am frightened.
You know where every sparrow falls and every creature wanders.
Through the intercession of St. Francis, protector of all animals,
I ask you to watch over my dog wherever he is right now.
Keep him safe from traffic, from cold, from hunger, and from danger.
Guide him home, or place a kind stranger in his path.
Bring us back together, Lord.
Amen.
5. Prayer for a Dying Dog
Lord,
my faithful companion is nearing the end of his life,
and my heart is full of both grief and gratitude.
St. Francis taught us that even death is not to be feared,
but met with peace and trust in your mercy.
I ask that you ease my dog's passing,
that he feel no pain and no fear —
only the warmth of your presence wrapping around him.
Thank you for every moment, every walk, every quiet evening at my side.
Receive him gently into your care.
Amen.
6. Prayer for Shelter Dogs
Most gracious God,
I lift up to you the countless dogs who tonight sleep in shelters,
who wait without knowing why,
who have known abandonment and fear.
St. Francis had a special tenderness for those who were forgotten and overlooked.
Raise up kind-hearted people to open their homes and their hearts to these animals.
Let no dog be without love for long.
Stir in us a greater sense of responsibility for the creatures you have placed in our care.
Amen.
7. A Daily Prayer of Gratitude for My Dog
Lord, thank you for the gift of my dog —
for the way he greets me like every morning is a miracle,
for the way he loves without condition,
without memory of my failures, without judgment.
St. Francis saw in animals a reflection of your generosity and goodness, and I see it too.
Help me to honor that gift by caring for him tenderly,
by never taking his loyalty for granted,
and by returning even a small measure of the pure and simple love he gives to me each day.
Amen.

Who Was Saint Francis of Assisi?
Born in 1181 in Assisi, Italy, Saint Francis dedicated his life to simplicity, humility, and compassion for all living creatures. He grew up in a wealthy family — his father was a cloth merchant. But everything changed after he spent a year as a prisoner of war. When he came home, as a young man, he gave up a life of luxury after a spiritual awakening, choosing instead to live in poverty, simplicity, and service to others, including animals. He founded the Franciscan Order, which embodies his teachings of humility and care for all creatures, whether human or animal.
What makes Francis so special is the way he saw animals. Known for his deep love and compassion for all creatures, he exemplified the relationship between humans and animals as sacred. He saw animals not just as beasts but as brothers and sisters, sharing in the divine breath of life. He preached to birds, blessed animals, and encouraged kindness toward all living beings.
He is particularly famous for the story of taming the wolf of Gubbio, where he made peace between a dangerous wolf and the townspeople. Whether you take that story literally or as legend, the message rings the same: all life is sacred and worth protecting.
His profound love for animals and the environment earned him the title of Patron Saint of Animals. On 29 November 1979, Pope John Paul II declared Francis the patron saint of ecology. It became customary for churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day of October 4, which became World Animal Day.[1]
